rice humanities workshop

The first Humanities Workshop of the semester will be February 11 at 5:00pm. Afterwards, we’ll retire to Valhalla for beer, wine, and snacks — all on us!

Interested in participating? Would you benefit from sharing a job talk, conference presentation, article, or other work-in-progress with your Humanities peers? If so, please email us at hgsa@rice.edu or contact your department representative by January 31.

90-second thesis competition

The 90-Second Thesis Competition is an academic elevator speech-style competition that was developed to challenge students to engage a broad audience intellectually and communicate the uniqueness and significance of their research topic in just 90 seconds.

Contestants are provided with professional coaching to hone their communication skills and prepare for the competition. Graduate students from all disciplines and levels are encouraged to register, and students are not required to be working on a thesis to compete.

These rapid-paced talks are focused toward scholarly research and the articulation of a critical gap or question, the methodology or approach to addressing that question, and the student’s original insight or contribution. Multiple prizes will be awarded.

The deadline to register is January 25.

The competition will take place March 11 from 5:00-8:00pm in McMurtry Auditorium (in Duncan Hall).

If you have questions, please contact Kiri Kilpatrick at kiri.kilpatrick@rice.edu.

versatile phd panel

On January 25-26, the Versatile PhD website will host a “Careers in Business” discussion panel. The panelists include an English PhD, a Communications Studies PhD, an English and American Literature PhD, and a History and Philosophy of Science PhD.
