The HGSA’s first Brown Bag, part of our work-in-progress series, for this year will be held Sept. 27 at 6 pm on the 2nd floor of HUMA, rm 227. Samuel Stoeltje, a PhD student in the English department, will be our first presenter.
Samuel will be presenting a draft of his paper “Oracularity in Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Speculative Theory,” in which he attends to the representation of what he has termed the “oracular mode” in Stoker’s classic work of gothic fiction. He uses this term to indicate a process of knowing or making-knowledge that both depends upon altered states of consciousness (respectively, hypnosis, psychosis and somnambulism) and is, at least ostensibly, physically impossible. Additionally, he will indicate what further directions the paper might take in future drafts, and invite questions and critique, as he prepares to present it at the SLSA 2017 conference in November.
He will present a 20 minute paper, discuss the various directions he sees going with this research, and then invite feedback from the interdisciplinary group of humanities graduate students in attendance.
Please join us in welcoming Samuel and helping him in his research and preparation!
If you are interesting in presenting your work-in-progress at an HGSA Brown Bag, please contact any of the HGSA officers or your department rep!
