Rice Gallery Kickoff Event – Michael set it up for August 22nd.
Stephanie – Dean’s Office will sponsor. Gallery, Dean, and HRC will each try to chip in around     $200. Suggests music students would play.
SJP approval still needed? Anthony: Yes. Forms needed for receipts for alcohol. Needed one         month in advance.
July 1 grants deadline for GSA.
Stephanie – Donations for alcoholic drinks possible. May be different rules for clubs than for     Dean’s Office.
GSA/HGSA/HRC professional development initiative
What kind of involvement from HGSA? We would generate program ideas and individuals. For Humanities students, by humanities students. HRC would like to assist, especially with logistics. They would like HGSA to develop curricula and personnel.
How do we get people to show up?
Timing: optimize for incoming students, but must be available for all humanities students, especially since present graduate students know their needs the best.
Idea Brainstorm:
* How to read for graduate school
* Etiquette
* Abstract writing
* University structure and hierarchy
* Funding how tos
* Rice oddities
* Syllabus writing, including Rice rules and regulations
* Organization, records, archival storage, and data management (Digital Humanities –             HRC and Digital Media Center)
* Theory swap (inter- and trans-disciplinary training)
* Publication training
* Revision techniques
* Paper workshops and Work in Progress
* Time management
* Stipend service across departments
* Dealing with problematic students
(Reps will bring list to department. Decide on list at June meeting.)
Ask department reps to consult with departments and come up with a list of ideas.
Ryan: Dean and HRC staff would be willing to teach these things, especially university structure and hierarchy.
Stephanie and Ryan leaving (May 16, 2013)
Goals for next academic year
Cross-departmental teaching and cross-pollination.
Space issues. Better spaces for graduate students.

Valuing the Humanities. Showcasing? PR issues. Work with the President to address this.
Talk to Caroline Levander and Dominic Boyer.  E2I and Human Sciences.
Reporting on what departments in the humanities have been doing. Promote graduate     research on website and/or in binder, publication.
